A little gift from Drake’s Sandwich Shop

a dint of sunny street
light shines up front
but in the back the
dim-lit high-back booths
pronounce the privacy
with dull green walls
and wooden seats and
glossy black accents

an ornate
stamped-tin ceiling seems
the only interloper here
(beyond the kitchen door
the dishes – heavy duty
dishes – clank and rattle)

Drake’s was old and
liked to let us know
we found the only sign
of really modern times
the vague and distant
melodies of modern songs
that crept in from the kitchen
and reminded us
the present was the past

  1. This is a beautiful poem. If you want to sit in one of these wooden green booths with the high backs again, come to the current exhibit at the Museum on Main Street in Ann Arbor. “Courting, Dating & Playing” takes a look at the history of social recreation in Washtenaw County. From parlor courting to picnics and Lovers Lanes to outdoor recreation it’s a fun visit down memory lane,. You’ll see dance cards and fancy J-Hop dresses, items from the Michigan Theater and of course, an authentic Drake’s Booth with an interactive touch screen. You’ll also see the famous cash register that Mr. Tibbles was usually sitting behind.. Recall some sweet memories, take a photo in the booth, share your favorite stories. The Museum is located at 500 N. Main Street (at the corner of E. Kingsley & Beakes), open Saturdays & Sundays from 12 noon-4PM and by appointment. Groups are welcome.
